Which tent size do you actually need?
Tent capacity ratings assume people lying shoulder to shoulder with no gear inside. In practice, size up by one if you want your rucksacks under cover — which in Kashmir you do, because rain arrives without much warning.
Two people with full trekking packs are comfortable in a three-person tent and cramped in a two. A family of four wants the six.
Three-season or four-season
For valley camping, Pahalgam, and the lower Great Lakes camps between June and September, a three-season tent is enough.
Above roughly 3,500 m, or any time between October and April, take the four-season alpine tent. It handles snow load and wind that a three-season will not, and the weight difference is not worth the risk on an exposed camp.

Common questions
How much does it cost to rent a tent in Srinagar?
From ₹299 a day for a two-person tent, ₹399 for a three-person, ₹499 for a four-person and ₹699 for a six-person. A four-season alpine two-person tent, for high or winter camps, is ₹599 a day.
Are your tents waterproof?
Yes. Every tent is a taped-seam waterproof design and is checked between hires. Kashmir gets sudden rain even in summer, and a tent that leaks is worse than no tent, so we pull anything doubtful out of the fleet.
Do I need to know how to pitch it?
No. We will pitch it with you at collection so you have done it once before you are doing it in the dark in the rain. It takes about five minutes and it is the most useful five minutes of the hire.
What if the tent is damaged on my trip?
Normal wear is expected and not charged. Genuine damage — a torn fly, a snapped pole beyond the spare, a burnt groundsheet — is assessed against photographs taken at return and deducted from the deposit. Tell us straight away if something breaks; we would rather get you a replacement than argue later.
