Pick the rating for where you sleep, not where you start
This is the mistake that ruins trips. Srinagar in July is warm. Nichnai and Gadsar, on the Great Lakes route, are not — nights there drop to freezing or below in the same week.
Comfort ratings are also optimistic by design. A bag rated to -5°C is comfortable at around zero for most people. If you sleep cold, take the warmer one; the price difference is ₹100 a day and the sleep difference is the whole trip.
Hygiene
Every bag is washed between hires and every hire includes a fresh liner. Rental sleeping bags have a deserved reputation and the only answer to it is doing the laundry, which we do.

Common questions
How much is it to rent a sleeping bag in Kashmir?
₹150 a day for a -5°C bag and ₹250 a day for a -15°C bag. A liner is included free with both. Sleeping mats hire separately from ₹100 a day.
Which rating do I need for the Kashmir Great Lakes trek?
The -15°C bag. The high camps on that route sit above 3,500 m and drop below freezing at night even in peak summer. A -5°C bag will leave you awake and cold for eight nights.
Are the sleeping bags washed between hires?
Yes, every one, and every hire includes a fresh liner as well. If a bag comes back and cannot be properly cleaned in time, it does not go out again until it has been.
Do I need a sleeping mat as well?
Yes, and people underestimate this. Most of the cold you feel at night comes from the ground, not the air. A ₹100 foam mat makes more difference to how warm you sleep than upgrading the bag does.
